Tools of Engagement
Limited Capacity seats available

In the “Need to Know” project, students collaborate to make a Google Site that focuses on a TED Ideas worth spreading issue. Through the process students learn to select, embed and present videos on their website, to create and embed a presentation slide show, to write a short summary of their project and embed all of these elements into a crafted website. The “Heroes Project” has students find an unsung hero and create a short film that documents their hero’s life. During the process, students must research the historical, social and political background of their subject, film the interview, then analyze and edit the film to produce the final documentary.

Expanding Literacy Practices Through Design Thinking and Digital Media
Limited Capacity seats available

This session introduces ways to use digital media tools to support and expand literacy education in the classroom and in a blended learning environment so that it includes multiple methods for students to represent and express their understanding of course content while finding the “best fit” for their particular interests and abilities. A design-based method is used to organize student learning and provide the framework for students to expand their abilities in multiple forms of meaning making. Particle classroom examples are provided to demonstrate and support presentation material. Suggestions for how to incorporate the design-based methods and possible assessment into existing curriculum are also addressed.
